What is speed dating? Per Wikipedia: “Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process of dating system whose purpose is to encourage people to meet a large number of new people. Its origins are credited to Rabbi Yaacov Deyo of Aish HaTorah, originally as a way to help Jewish singles meet and marry.”

Like many of you, I did not believe in this way of matchmaking. I assumed it would be very awkward to meet people for just few minutes and move on to someone else. Despite my initial belief, I signed up for a local speed dating event in the Washington, DC area. When I shared the news with my best friend, she was surprised to say the least. I wanted to give it a fair try. What is there to lose, right? I have been single for a while and online dating just was no longer for me.

The day of the event came and I was very nervous. What do you wear? Are you dressing up as you would on a first date? After trying on several outfits, I opted for a comfortable dress and my favourite shoes. I drove to the event location in Rockville, Maryland. I was greeted by very nice hosts and they assured me I was going to have a nice time. Ok, I am here. While I was waiting for the event to start, I ordered a glass of wine to calm my nerves. I highly recommend that! All participants were given simple instructions and we were ready to roll. The process was simple: women sat at their tables while the men rotate every seven minutes. After the first rotation, the nervousness was gone and I was actually having fun! Time just flew, I did not even realize I met eight men during that evening and all were very nice and easy to talk to. I even selected “yes” for two of them. I was hoping to get the same interest on their side.

The next day, I have received an e-mail with a positive match. Mark also said “yes”. I was very excited to receive my match. Mark is a tall, handsome gentleman who loves nature and hiking. We have exchanged e-mails the very same day and decided to meet for coffee. Then came a hiking date. And a museum date. And this spring, we will celebrate our one year together. Mark was also a former “speed dating non-believer” but his friend convinced him to join.

I was wrong about speed dating. In today’s world of hiding behind screens, it is actually refreshing to meet single people face to face. I am glad I did. I met Mark. And guess what, my best friend is going out on a date tonight with a guy she met during a speed dating event. So put that phone down, walk away from your computer screen. Your special person might be out there at the next event!
