Is Homeowners’ Insurance Required?
Whilst in most states some level of auto insurance is required by state law, homeowners’ insurance is not regulated in the same manner. However, most homeowners have to borrow funds to purchase a home and homeowners’ insurance is then a condition required by their lender. That aside, your home is such a major investment that you can’t really afford not to insure it. Even if you own the home outright, it’s unlikely you’d be able to, or want to rebuild the home from your savings in the event it was destroyed by fire or some other calamity. Insuring your home and the possessions you keep in it is just good financial sense and should be high on your priority list - even if finances are tight.
If you are struggling financially and finding it difficult to manage your insurance premiums, consider financing your premiums so you can pay them monthly. It’s likely to cost a little more but it can certainly make it easier to budget and less likely that you won’t be able to pay it at all.
If you have different types of insurance policies, consider shifting them all to one insurer. You might find you get a generous discount on all your policies for doing so. Another way to reduce premiums if you need to is to increase the deductible amounts.
