Use the following tips to make sure that your trees and shrubs stay healthy and beautiful.

Planting
Planting of trees and shrubs will provide you with plenty of exercise. It is not very exhausting but digging and lifting will work your muscles. Trees and shrubs not only benefit the environment but also shelter wildlife and filter the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Whichever method you use for planting your trees and shrubs make sure you water them well after planting. You should spread two to three inches deep layer of mulch over the soil around the plant to create a protective zone so that you do not have to mow the lawn grasses right up against the newly planted tree. This will also help the soil around the plant to maintain its moistures levels for longer.

Staking
You might need to stake newly planted trees especially if they are planted as bare-root or if they are not upright. It is important to support the newly planted specimen for the first year or two, after that you can remove the stakes so that the trees and shrubs can develop a sturdy trunk and root system. A simple way of supporting a young tree is by using a single stake about as tall as the tree.

Pruning
Trees and shrubs benefit a lot from pruning throughout their life. It does not matter what trees and shrubs you are growing, it is always a good idea to prune out any dead or diseased branches. This will not only help the plant to look better but it will also prevent the disease from spreading. You should also prune out any wayward stems that block the pathways, driveways, or grow into the side of the house or any other structure. It is also a good idea to remove the branches that cross and rub against one another, because when the bark gets rubbed off, it makes the trees and shrubs more susceptible to disease.

Watering
Once fully grown, most of the trees and shrubs do not need much watering except for the periods of extended drought. The root systems of these plants are good at finding moisture which is why the ground near the tree is usually dry. During the first two years, trees and shrubs require moisture to grow which is why they should be watered during that period.

Feeding
Most trees and shrubs do not require any supplemental nutrients to stay healthy. However, in areas where there is poor soil fertilizers can be helpful to plants. General purpose fertilizers are readily available and all you need to do is follow the instructions on the packaging and use accordingly.
