Dr. Rand Winton worked for 14 years as a registered nurse prior to returning to school to pursue her life long dream of becoming a veterinarian. Her nursing career saw her in diverse settings from neurosurgery to obstetrics, to intensive care and finally, to the emergency department where she served as the nursing supervisor for five years.
Having made the decision to pursue a new career path, Dr. Winton attended the University of Massachusetts at Boston to complete the prerequisites necessary for veterinary school and finished her last organic chemistry and biochemistry classes just four days before starting classes at Tufts University School for Veterinary Medicine. During her senior year at Tufts, Dr. Winton received special recognition for excellence in large and small animal anesthesia. After graduating with honors, Dr. Winton was accepted into a 13 month rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital, a 24 hour emergency and specialty practice in the Boston area.
Ready for a change after seven years in New England, Dr. Winton relocated to Colorado in 1997 and joined the staff at VCA Wingate. She has retained a strong interest in anesthesia, and also enjoys the "puzzle solving" of complex medical cases.

Dr. Winton shares her home with two cats, three great danes and an English Mastiff of her own, along with whatever fosters need her care. She has a son who lives nearby and enjoys seeing him whenever possible. Since August, 2008, Dr. Winton has served as a co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Big Dogs Huge Paws, Inc., a non-profit rescue specializing in giant breed dogs. She oversees the medical care of all of the dogs in the rescue and has fostered many special needs dogs in order to return them to good health. Her life truly has "gone to the dogs" and she wouldn't have it any other way.

In her professional life and in her charitable work, Dr. Winton has achieved a goal held since early childhood: To help animals live the lives they deserve.
