Whether you’ve been complaining about back pain for years, or it suddenly appeared last week, a spine problem is most likely to crop up when you’re least expecting it. After all, the human spine is made up of 26 vertebrae that each have their own function and purpose. If any one of them is damaged or injured, they are subjected to constant stress and strain. And when that happens, the results aren’t pretty. Fortunately, not everything is as bad as it sounds. A little research into your symptoms can help you determine if a visit to a specialist is warranted or not. These are some of the signs that should tell you it’s time to visit a spine doctor:

1. You frequently feel stiff or tired

If you experience any of the following symptoms, it might be time for a visit to your spine specialist:

- Feeling tired all the time

- Suffering from stiff neck or back pain

- Experiencing headaches or dizziness

- Becoming more forgetful

2. Your sleeping habits change

If you are sleeping on one side of your body more than the other, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong with your spine. Sleeping on your back will cause the natural curve in your spine to become exaggerated while sleeping on your stomach can put pressure on the nerves in your neck. If these changes are anywhere close to being noticeable, it’s time to get checked out by a spine doctor.

3. You can’t turn your neck from side to side

If you can’t turn your neck from side to side without feeling pain, it’s time to see a spine doctor. If you have pain and difficulty getting into a sitting position or standing position, this could be a sign that something is wrong.

4. You have been slipping or falling a lot

Slipping and falling can be a problem caused by many factors. If you have recently been slipping or falling, it could be a sign that something is wrong with your spine. Most often, the cause of this type of injury is because the muscles in your legs aren’t strong enough to support your weight when you are walking, resulting in a fall.

Additionally, there could also be an issue with your balance or coordination. In either case, you should visit a specialist rather than try to fix these issues on your own. A visit to the doctor should help you get answers to the question of what’s causing those falls and what can be done about them.

5. You have sharp pain when turning or moving in certain directions

Sharp pain in the back is a sure sign that something is wrong. You should invest in spine surgery, even if you aren’t experiencing any other symptoms. If you are experiencing sharp pain when turning or moving in certain directions, it’s time to see a spine specialist.

6. You’ve had symptoms persist for more than a week

If your symptoms have been present for more than a week, it’s time to visit a spine doctor. If you have experienced severe back pain, numbness in your legs, and/or tingling in your arms for more than a week, you should visit a spinal surgeon. This is the first sign that something may be seriously wrong. But if the pain has been present for less than a week, it’s important to be cautious.

It’s possible that the pain has been present for less than a week and will go away on its own. It’s also important to note that if the pain has been present for more than two weeks but not at all in the last five days, you should visit a spine doctor. This is because there’s an increased chance that this problem could develop into something serious.

7. You can’t sit for long without hurting

If you can’t sit for hours without any pain, chances are the problem is not related to your spine. Unfortunately, this type of situation tends to occur quite often when people have back problems. It’s because sitting for a long time causes the muscles and ligaments in your back to weaken and stretch.

If you are experiencing this type of pain, make sure it doesn’t happen all the time. You should also avoid sleeping in an unusual position that puts pressure on your back or neck. When you sleep on your stomach, there is a high chance that you will wake up with soreness or stiffness in your back or neck area.
