Home Owners Insurance and Content Value
Ohio Home Owners Insurance generally provides a provision that covers the content of your home as well as the building structure. When taking out a policy you’re generally asked to estimate the value of the home contents – which includes your personal possessions.
It’s very easy to underestimate the replacement cost of your home contents, especially if you purchased items a long time ago or if they were gifts. However, it’s important to get an accurate, current estimate of the replacement cost at today’s prices so that if you need to you can purchase items without being substantially out of pocket.
Go through each room in the house and note down the exact model names and numbers of the items, as well as the year you bought it. Make sure that you include:
• Furniture
• Books, CDS, records and DVDs
• Paintings, ornaments of value and antiques
• White goods such as refrigerator, washing machine and dryer
• All electrical equipment
• Jewellery, clothing, shoes and accessories
When calculating, consider the value of the item new at today's prices. Receipts and guarantees are a big help here. Don’t throw receipts out – file them. You may be asked for proof of ownership in the event that you have to make a claim.
If you can, obtain photographs or a video of the contents of each room and keep this in a safe place - ideally not in your house.
Make sure that you don’t forget sports and exercise equipment, musical instruments, luggage and camping equipment, floor coverings, linen and food and drink.
Finally, check with your insurer regarding any expensive jewels or artwork. You may be required to have a special endorsement on the policy, or a “personal property floater”.
