What is a timing belt? A timing belt is made of rubber and it helps to keep your vehicle's engine running by meshing the workings of the camshaft and the crankshaft in order to keep the valves safely moving. If you have an older vehicle, its timing belt may actually be a timing chain and it serves the same purpose and is just as important to the workings of your car.
To explain a little more in order to simplify things, the camshaft and the crankshaft need to be interpreted. Your car's camshaft works the engine valves, which works air and gas in and out. The crankshaft moves the engine's pistons up and down. It is absolutely necessary for the two systems to work together harmoniously otherwise problems can occur to the pistons, valves, the engine and/ or other parts close by. The timing belt keeps each system turning at the correct rate to keep everything in sync.
When timing belts go bad, it is typically very sudden. It will cause your vehicle's engine to lose power or just stop. If your car is older and has a timing chain, when it goes bad, you should hear a lot of noise. If it breaks, you should hear a cracking sound.
Since there are no obvious signs that your timing belt may be on its way out, it is a good idea to have your timing belt replaced according to the guidelines of your car's manufacturer. Typically, 100,000 miles is the appropriate length of travel until you should have your timing belt replaced. However, if your have an older car, 60,000 miles would probably be more ideal.
