Most of us have heard the words "shocks and struts" at some point in our lives. Whether it be in a conversation, from a television commercial, an advertisement in a magazine or billboard. Or maybe you have seen on a poster in your auto care shop, we have all seen it somewhere.
Although most of us say "shocks and struts" like they are interchangeable, they are in fact two totally separate parts on a vehicle. There is only one job that shocks (or shock absorbers) have on your vehicle and that is to prevent bouncing. Struts, on the other hand have a much more complicated job function. Struts are, in fact, structurally part of the suspension system. This means that the struts provide structural support for your vehicle's suspension. Struts affect your vehicle's comfort while riding as well as control steering, braking and wheel alignment. When the bad struts affect your vehicle's alignment negatively, it can cause wear on the components of the car's suspension, which also includes the vehicle's tires.
These two parts, shocks and struts, work together to help provide control of your vehicle while you are driving it. Braking, turning, accelerating and even less than desirable road terrain are helped by maintaining properly functioning shocks and struts.
