The check engine light is a handy-dandy indicator light that your vehicle comes already equipped with when you buy it. It is right there on your car's dashboard. It may appear as one of a variety of images such as, the shape of an engine or an engine with the words "check engine". If a light comes on and you think it may be the check engine light, refer to your vehicle's owner's manual to confirm.
There are many reasons why your check engine light may have illuminated. The one reason that may surprise you is that the gas cap needs your attention. Maybe you bought gas recently and you were a little sloppy or careless with how you put your gas cap back on. This is the easiest fix of all! Just find a safe spot to pull over on the side of the road and reapply the cap properly.
There are, unfortunately, other real problems that could be rearing their ugly heads. First things first, if your check engine light is not caused by the gas cap, take your car into your mechanic and ask them to perform a diagnostic code reading. This should give them a reading on just where the problem area is located. Typically, there are 4 reasons why your check engine lights have been triggered.

1- Your vehicle needs new spark plugs and/or spark plug wires.
2- Your Mass Airflow Sensor is bad and needs to be replaced.
3- Your O2 (oxygen) sensor needs a replacement.
4-Your car's catalytic converter is bad and needs changed out.

Any and all of these issues can be serious. If your check engine light is on Do NOT ignore the warning. If you do ignore it, you could end up with an even bigger and more costly repair. www.ShiffletAutoCare.com
