Columbia SC Weekend Activities 8-1-2010

 

Comedy show There’s no better way to spend a summer evening than enjoying a heavy dose of laughter. Head to Township Auditorium on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the J. Anthony Brown and Friends Comedy Jam and you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. Special guests will include Sheryl Underwood and George Wallace. Tickets are $35.50 to $40.50. An early World Series

Root, root, root for the home team starting this weekend as South Carolina plays host to the Dixie Youth Baseball “O” Zone World Series. Sixteen teams of 11- and 12-year-olds from 11 states will be in town from July 30-Aug. 5 for baseball action. The series will be held at Lexington Sports Complex just off U.S. Highway 1 on Ball Park Road. Tickets are $6 for ages 12 and older; $4 for ages 6-12; no charge for those younger than 6. The home run derby is at 2 p.m. Friday; admission is $1.

Happy 75th, Cromer's From 9 a.m. to noon on July 31 at 1700 Huger St., celebrate Cromer’s birthday. This is a farmers market-inspired event with cotton candy, popcorn, peanuts and snow cones. They will also have live music and seasonal plants, and The Farmer’s Shed will be there. There will also be a bake-off, with categories for sweet and savory treats. Mo’ Betta Soul: Chuck Taylor Dance Party

Kick it old school at Immaculate Consumption, 933 Main St., from 8-11 p.m. Thursday. Don your Chucks for the July installment of Mo’ Betta Soul Thursdays, an old-school dance party featuring music and visual art demonstrations. Local shoe sponsors will be donating goodies, and you can get your Chuck Taylors custom painted by artist Cedric Umoja. Admission is $3.

The youngest son of jazz

Stop in at the Blue Martini at 808 Lady St. on Saturday for some magical jazz. The Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet will entertain with piano, bass, drums and vibes. Marsalis is the youngest brother of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo Marsalis, and son of Ellis Marsalis, part of the “first family of jazz.” There will be two shows, one at 8:30 p.m. and the second at 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Fascinating history On the first Sunday of the month from 1-5 p.m., the S.C. State Museum offers $1 admission. That’s right, you can probably bring the whole extended family for less than $30. Enjoy exhibits detailing our state’s history, including Pirates, Privateers and Buccaneers, Palmetto Portraits, S.C. Silver and Tangible History. Call 803-898-4921 for information.

It’s cool to be wimpy Making up for last week’s weather cancellation, Movies in the Park is showing Diary of a Wimpy Kid this week in Finlay Park, with The Love Handles performing a concert before the movie. Friday is also kids day, so bring your kids, your neighbors’ kids, your friends’ kids and have a ball. Here's the plot: To survive the never-ending ordeal of middle school and attain the recognition and status he feels he deserves, Greg Heffley devises an endless series of can't-miss schemes, all of which, of course, go awry. The movie starts at dusk. There’s no charge to come out.

Wonder and tranquility Bring the family to EdVenture children’s museum at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Thursday or Saturday to watch as newly emerged butterflies are released into their new home in the Blooming Butterflies exhibit. An EdVenture educator will be answering questions about these members of the order Lepidoptera. Admission is $3 in addition to museum admission. Call 803-779-3100 or send an e-mail for information.

Family Fun Day & Health Fair Learn ways to make healthier lifestyle choices in a fun environment. The Midlands Community Health Center will hold its Color Your Mind, Body & Soul Family Fun Day at 1 p.m. Saturday at the C.R. Neal Dream Center, 2430 Atlas Road. There will be activities for the entire family, including complimentary health screenings and food, plus exhibitors, carnival rides, arts and crafts, and games for kids of all ages. Street art documentary

Exit Through the Gift Shop marks the feature-film debut of notorious street artist Banksy. The documentary focuses on French-born Los Angeles thrift shop owner Thierry Guetta, whose apparent compulsion to videotape every moment of his life led him to document the phenomenon of contemporary street art. Unimpressed with Guetta's footage, Banksy takes over filmmaking duties and Guetta reinvents himself as a street artist named Mr. Brainwash. Much to Banksy's surprise, he immediately becomes a darling of the Los Angeles art scene. The movie opens Friday at the Nickelodeon Theatre. For listings or more information, call 803-254-8234.

Coming soon: John Tudor and Friends: Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. The magic show will open the 2010 performance season at the Newberry Opera House. Go online for tickets or the complete 2010 lineup. Gamecocks home opener: 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2. The University of South Carolina Gamecocks open their season against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. Columbia Blues Festival: Oct. 1-2 The 16th annual festival will be held at Martin Luther King Memorial Park in Five Points. The event begins at noon each day.
