Having an abortion can take a physical and mental toll on not only the patient but also the rest of the patient’s family. Coming to terms with such a decision can be very difficult. Figuring out how to heal mentally and emotionally after an abortion can be even more difficult. Today, we will discuss some important tips for healing after having an abortion.

Surround Yourself with Family

Be sure to surround yourself with family after having an abortion. Even though you might want to be alone, the warmth and love of your family and friends can go a long way towards healing. They will cry with you. They will laugh with you. They will answer your questions and simply sit in silence with you. When you have people to lean on, be sure to lean on them.

Abortion Counseling

Not every patient will require abortion counseling but know that it is available to you. You will be able to speak with experienced therapists and even other patients who have gone through what you are going through following an abortion. Counseling can be done as often as needed. This means that you can go once per week, twice per week, once per month or whatever fits your schedule.

Keep a Journal

Try keeping a journal. It’s understandable that this is not something you would want to go back and read but it can be very beneficial to get your feelings down on paper. Simply sitting down and writing about your feelings can help you heal after an abortion. The journal will be for your eyes only, which means you can be as honest and open as you want.

Complete a “Feel-Good” List

Construct a list of “feel-good” items that make you happy. Be sure to do one or more of these activities each day until you complete the entire list.
