For example, in the Delve League Exalted Orbs started out at 58 Chaos Orb price on the 1st of September. Currently in Delve Softcore Exalted Orbs are valued at 140 Chaos Orbs. The reasoning is quite simple – Exalted Orbs are many times more rare than Chaos Orbs but their value is lower at the start of a League due to two reasons:
1. Not many Chaos Orbs have been farmed up in the first few days.
2. There are too few Exalted Orbs available to be matched up for Chaos Orbs.
Generally, when flipping or “investing” into Exalted Orbs a player should note that most of the time Exalted Orb value will rise over time and Chaos Orb value will decrease over time. Chaos Orbs become quite accessible as a trading instrument in later parts of the game as farming becomes easy. In most Leagues, a lot of Chaos Orbs will be added in the second and third week (according to Poe Ninja). This is quite reasonable as there are still many casual players who do not rush their characters to max in the first few days but their farming still adds a considerable amount of Chaos Orbs to the economy.
Therefore, to flip Exalted Orbs effectively, a player should keep in mind a few factors – the changing economy and the decreasing price of Chaos Orbs. In Path of Exile the mantra of “buy low, sell high” can be switched to “buy early, sell late” for almost any currency outside of Chaos Orbs themselves. Though, remember, that getting into the market early will require and incredibly efficient and effective build to start farming Uber Lab or end-game maps with the shortest time investment possible.
