Lexington High band tuning up for Thanksgiving parade appearance – The Lexington High School Marching Band is tuning up for their trip to Philadelphia to appear in that city’s ABC/IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade. More than 120 of the band’s 156 members will travel and participate in the oldest existing Thanksgiving Day parade in the country and take a cultural side-trip to New York City. Fundraising efforts are underway. The band holds its annual Florida Citrus Fruit sale beginning October 18. Fruit orders may be given to band members or by visiting www.catband.com. Band supporters may also choose to shop at Bi-Lo and Publix and use their loyalty cards. These grocery chains then contribute money to the LHS band. Anyone interested in becoming an LHS band booster may visit www.catband.com and click on the “join” link.

Chapin High choirs offer “Fall For Music” – The Choirs of Chapin High School will present a collection of patriotic songs followed by desserts and coffee at their “Fall For Music” event Monday, October 18 and Tuesday, October 19 at Chapin Presbyterian Church located at 600 Old Lexington Highway. Doors open at 7p.m. performance starts at 7:30, Admission Active military and veterans free; $5 for adults, $3 for students, children under 12 are free and adults older than 65 are free.

Halloween Events happening around Lake Murray – Will-o-the Wisp in the Wetland Preserve – this fun Halloween celebration is an interactive and educational experience for children. The adventure begins with a hayride from the Environmental Education Center to the boardwalk at the Wetland Preserve. Once there, Trick or treaters will hear animal sounds and see night creatures as they stroll along the boardwalk gathering candy. Nature Interpreters along the way will have nocturnal, animal facts to share. Following the walk, children can decorate a cookie, make s’mores, enjoy a story and play games while adults enjoy hot cider! Come in costume and bring a flashlight Friday, October 29 6-9p.m. to Saluda Shoals Park Environmental Center, 5605 Bush River Road, Columbia.

News from the Lake Murray Assoc. – Whatever became of the Hydilla and Grass Carp in Lake Murray? Do you ever wonder what happened to Hydrilla? For those of you that began enjoying Lake Murray after 2005, you may be wondering “who” is Hydrilla. Actually, Hydrilla is an aquatic plant, an Illegal Nuisance Aquatic Plant to be exact. It is a submersed plant that grows to the surface and forms dense mats. Boaters on Lake Murray found themselves strangled in the web of the long thin branches that were like tentacles if they didn’t keep a sharp eye for the floating mat. Many attempts were made to control hydrilla before the introduction of Grass Carp. LMA supported the introduction of grass carp into the lake by supplying financial support to purchase the fish through the sale of “Grass Carp” T-shirts.
