Carolina Wildlife Care Hosts Purple Martin Cruise – Carolina Wildlife Care is hosting its 5^th annual Sunset Purple Martin Cruise, a fundraising event that promises an evening of food, fun and purple martins. Proceeds from the cruise benefit injured and orphaned migratory birds at CWC’s wildlife rehabilitation center in Columbia. Guests set sail July 21 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm aboard the passenger yacht, The Spirit of Lake Murray. The destination is Bomb Island, the largest purple martin sanctuary. Guests enjoy live music and watch purple martins arrive overhead, before forming a circling funnel cloud of birds that descends onto the island. Guests learn about purple martins, their rehabilitation at Carolina Wildlife Care, and could possible experience an extra thrill in the release of a rehabilitated purple martin that evening. A display of hors d’oeuvres by Capital City Catering, a “purple” champagne send-off, wine, beer, and other beverages are served throughout the evening. The cost is $65 per person.

CATE Students Compete Nationally – Career and Technical Education students from Lexington-Richland Five recently competed in the 47^th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in Missouri. The students earned a number of awards. More than 1,000 business and industry partners look for the Skill Point Proficiency Certificate in student’s portfolios when they apply for jobs. More than 5,400 career and technical education students that won awards on the state level compete at the NLSC each year. Ninety-one different trade, technical and leadership fields are represented.
