Preventing Storm Damage and Homeowners’ Insurance
Making regular claims for storm damage under a homeowners’ insurance policy may result in higher premiums in the future, so taking steps to prevent storm damage to your home can actually save you money. It’s also worth remembering that most insurers will not pay for damage caused by poor maintenance, rather than the actual storm.
We all know that Mother Nature can be beautiful one minute and ferocious the next. A sudden storm can catch us unaware and do substantial damage to a home but regular home maintenance can lessen and sometimes prevent that damage. Here are some ways to lessen the risk of damage:
 Have your roof inspected for wear and tear. Rotting wood or missing/damaged shingles ought to be replaced right away.
 Check your yard for overgrown, or dead or dying trees. If these obstacles pose a threat, remove them.
 Inspect your siding, if you have it. See if there are any cracks, openings or other damage. These areas may be sources of leaks, which can then lead to damaged walls.
 Look around your home for problem areas on interior ceilings and walls, and arrange repairs if needed.
 Look over porch railings and steps. Summer rain and humidity can rot wood and create a significant safety issue.
 During the storm season, don’t leave items that if blown towards your home could cause window breakage or other damage.
Of course, make sure your homeowners’ insurance is in place and up to date at all times.
