Cannabis, which is more popularly known as marijuana, is classified as a cannabinoid drug. The plant cannabis is from the plant gene known as Cannabacea. At least three species of Cannabacea are recognized: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica or Cannabis ruderalis. There are various cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant, but as of the moment, the exact number is yet to be confirmed. It is important to delve into the details of the cannabis plant as cannabinoids, medical marijuana, medical marijuana for dogs have all become important topics in the present society as the acceptance for cannabis widens.

While cannabis and marijuana have become interchangeably used, to be technical about it, these are really different things. Cannabis is the plant while marijuana is the dried leaves and flowers of the plant used for getting high. Marijuana is the processed plant that people smoke in either a joint or through a bong. But over the years, marijuana has become more than just a leisure puff, it has also become an important therapeutic component among those suffering from cancer. This healing response eventually gave birth to medical marijuana.

Originally, medical marijuana was used among people suffering from cancer. Even during the time marijuana was still illegal, people suffering from cancer buy them just to feel temporary relief from pain. With so many cancer victims and survivors standing by the advantageous effect of marijuana, its medical impact was eventually accepted. This is why medical marijuana is legal in 33 American states.

If medical marijuana is good enough for humans, could it be good enough for dogs as well? Not necessarily. The acceptance of medical marijuana for dogs is more tricky, mostly because studies regarding the effects of marijuana in dogs have not been as extensive compared to studies on humans. So a dog’s access to medical marijuana is more complicated.

The other form of cannabis is the hashish, which is the dried plant resin that is usually added to baked goods like cookies and brownies. Hashish can also be added to tobacco so it can be smoked. There is also the hash oil, which can also be added to a cigarette to give the smoker the feeling of being high. But this is potent so users should be mindful of the quantity that will be used. Another potent form is the marijuana concentrate, which is also in the form of oil. It is a concentrated THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol, which is four times more potent than regular marijuana.

In whatever form cannabis is, it is still considered a drug, but in most cases, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has taken the form out of the restrictive class of controlled substance category. But as a drug or chemical compound, its use, especially in large quantities, will have some risks. So just with any other forms of drugs, cannabis or cannabinoid intake should be controlled. The effect of cannabinoids, medical marijuana, medical marijuana for dogs and other processed forms of cannabis differ from one person (or dog) to another. Most people feel high—happy, relaxed and euphoric. But still, there are others who just feel anxious and paranoid. Anyone interested in the recreational use of marijuana should test its effect in the least quantity possible before making a habit of using it.
