Condensate pumps are important products used with air conditioners, refrigerators, and any other appliance that has a buildup of water when running. The water comes about when water vapor created by steam meets a cool unit. The water created then has to be removed from the appliance. This is done using a condensate pump, which will pump the water from the appliance to a pipe that drains outside of the property.

Condensate pumps do not run constantly, especially those found in appliances. Instead, they rely on a float that sits in the area where the water pools. Once the float rises high enough, it triggers the pump to begin removing the water from the appliance. As the water drains, the float recedes to a lower level. This will trigger the condensate pump to stop working.

There are some systems that have an emergency shutoff switch, which is automatic, should the pump not activate when the float reaches the initial level. The shutoff switch is usually a level higher than the one where the pump activates. If the float reaches this higher level, the shutoff switch will activate and the entire system will be shut down so the water does not overflow.

Condensate pumps have impellers in them. The impeller is the piece of the pump that actually performs the pumping of the water. The impeller is found at the bottom of the pump. The motor of the pump is attached to the impeller with a metal bar, which is located out of the water. When the motor turns, the impeller pumps the water and sends it to the drain pipe connected to the appliance.

There are some systems that use condensate pumps to not only pump the water, but also reuse it. This is typically found in systems involving steam. The water is pumped to a different location, such as a treatment area, and then sent back into the system.
