Decorating For Christmas - A Perfect Family Event

I don't know about you, but I thoroughly enjoy seeing the home decorated for Christmas. The only "down" side is the time and effort it takes to get it looking so special. I'm not complaining although I do wish I could get my magic wand working so it went faster.

But the point I want to make is this: Turning the decorating into a family event can truly become a highlight of your year. Why is this such a big deal?

Christmas is a time meant for families. And decorating the house together is a great way to start the season off right.

I'm stating the obvious here, but the big benefit to decorating as a family is the time you spend to together. You're talking, helping, laughing, reminiscing about Christmases of the past . . . all with zero TV or other distractions. I recommend putting a stack of Christmas CDs in the stereo and have the festive music playing throughout your home as you decorate.

Give the kids specific tasks that match their age and abilities. The younger they are the more pride they typically feel in doing a job well that Mom or Dad has asked for.

For the younger ones this might be as simple as sprinkling the fake snow around select decorations. Or carefully putting their personal ornament on the Christmas tree. And making old-fashioned strings of cranberries or popcorn are still great family fun in our "modern" times.

Don't have children? Decorating is great for husbands and wives as a team. Or with your fiancé, brother or sister, or whomever! How about this? If you still live in the same town as your parents go help them decorate their house and then have them come and help you. It will go faster for everyone and you get to spend some special time with your parents.

Again, Christmas is a time for families to come together. And it doesn't have to be limited to Christmas dinner or opening the gifts.

Another way to expand this family event is by making some of your own decorations. Since most children love crafts, it may add extra excitement to the whole decorating experience. There are tons of ideas on the Internet. And your local craft store may even have some classes on Christmas crafts.

By the way, if you like crafts and especially if you enjoy crafts from yesteryear . . . take a look at the resource box at the end of the article. Or if you're looking for something new to the household decorations this year and need to go shopping for it, why not take someone along?

Christmas is a truly special time of year. You can deepen the joy and spirit of the season by spending more time with your family in activities where you help each other, talk and have fun. Decorating your home is a perfect example. Merry Christmas!
