Here are eight tips on how to relieve back pain during pregnancy:
1. Practice good posture
As your child grows, your center of gravity shifts forward. Leaning back to compensate for falling forward might strain the muscles in your lower back and cause back pain during pregnancy. Remember the following postural guidelines:
- Stand tall and straight.
- Keep your chest up.
- Maintain a comfortable posture with your shoulders back. - Keep your knees loose.
Stand with a comfortably wide stance for the best support. If you must stand for extended periods, place one foot on a low-step stool and take frequent breaks.
Good posture also entails sitting with caution. Select a chair with back support, or position a small pillow behind your lower back.
2. Get the right gear
Wear shoes with strong arch support and with low heels (rather than flat). Wearing high heels may cause your equilibrium to shift forward, causing you to tumble.
You should also think about using a maternal support belt. Even though studies on the usefulness of maternity support belts are limited, some women find the extra support beneficial.
3. Lift any objects properly
Squat and raise your legs while raising even a little object. Avoid bending your knees or raising something with a bent back. If you need help, don’t be shy to ask for it.
4. Sleep on your side
Sleep on your side rather than your back. Maintain one or both knees bent. Put a pregnancy or support pillow between your bent knees, beneath your abdomen, and behind your back. It will help minimize the pressure on your back.
5. Try heat, cold, or massage
Massage or the administration of a heating pad or an ice pack to your back may assist, while evidence to support their effectiveness is limited.
6. Include physical activity in your daily routine
Regular physical activity can help keep your back in shape and may alleviate back pain during pregnancy. With your doctor's approval, attempt light exercises like walking or water exercise. A physical therapist can also demonstrate stretches and exercises that may be beneficial.
Stretch your lower back as well. Try to rest on your hands and knees, with your head and spine aligned. Pull in your stomach, slightly rounding your back. Hold for a few seconds before relaxing your stomach and back, keeping your back as flat as possible. Work your way up to 10 repetitions. Inquire with your doctor about different stretching activities.
7. Consider complementary therapies
Acupuncture may help with back pain during pregnancy. Chiropractic care may also be beneficial to some ladies. However, more research is required. Talk to your doctor before trying complementary therapy. Make it a point to inform the chiropractor or acupuncturist that you are pregnant.
8. Know when to consult your healthcare provider
Consult your doctor if you have severe back pain during pregnancy or if your pain lasts more than two weeks. They may advise you to take painkillers, like acetaminophen (Tylenol), or to undergo other treatment, like physical therapy or acupuncture.
Remember that back pain during pregnancy can be a sign of preterm labor or a urinary tract infection. If you develop back discomfort during pregnancy that is accompanied by vaginal bleeding, fever, or burning while urinating, immediately call your doctor or 911.
