How far to drive down the Outer Banks?

My question is, given that we have limited time how far should we drive down the outer banks from Nags Head - at the moment I'm penciling in Pea Island as the turnaround point? Is there anything we really *must see* in that area? I'd hate to go half way down only to get back and be told we should have gone just a little further to see something pretty cool. Should we attempt to get all the way to Buxton?
