The biggest reason it is so difficult to create viral content is because human nature is unpredictable. People are more attracted to things that either serve their base instincts, or things that are negative, nasty or offensive. Part of the reason businesses have so much trouble creating viral content is because they have to find a way to do it without being negative, nasty or offensive. Here are ten tips that will dramatically increase your chances of creating successful viral content.
1 - Create The Unexpected
It’s easy to create the unexpected. The hardest part is finding something unexpected that a jaded “we’ve-seen-it-all” public will respond to.
Do you remember crazy frog? Part of its success was the fact a young boy made a convincing motorbike sound and that somebody was nutty enough to put a frog on it. The whole notion was unexpected and people loved it.
2 - A Meme Goes Viral Very Easily
Want to write viral content? Put it on a meme. They are popular at the moment because they are easy to pass around and post on social media. People love them and they are easy. Just do not do a “When you see it” meme because people are sick of them. People are also getting sick of “Find the kitty” memes too. Just opt for funny or shocking if you want some success.
3 - Create A Misunderstanding GIF
The best ones are the funniest ones. Create a GIF animation that shows something happening that is not really happening. For example, when Burt (from Sesame Street’s Burt And Ernie) rings the doorbell in an agitated manner, it is easy to create a sound-less GIF that makes it look like he is having sex with the door. Pick a moment when a Muppet looks at the camera, and add in your own comment that makes people laugh.
4 - Feature A Sexy Woman On Your Video Thumbnail
Maybe you are creating something that is posted as a video. For some reason it is more likely to go viral if you feature a beautiful woman as the thumbnail. This is also true if you have a blog post you wish to go viral. Kate Upton has made plenty of content go viral.
5 - Add An Image To Your Writing
Have you seen those websites that have square images and captions below? Usually it is something such as, “Even young boys can make money doing this” or “You won’t believe what (insert celebrity name) has done this time.” It is a crude and manipulative technique, but people are still falling for it.
6 - Create A Counter-Argument Message
Take a tender issue, and use the Harvard paradigm to create a short counter-argument with at least three stages. (http://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/pages/counter-argument).
For example:
1. People in the US say they use guns to protect their homes.
2. They also say they are careful gun owners and lock their guns away.
3. How then do they expect to protect themselves or their home if they are home invaded?
7 - Tell An Obvious Truth
A great meme bounced around the Internet. A Muslim extremist had a sign saying, “Death to all that do not worship Allah,” and next to the picture was a Liberal saying, “He doesn’t mean that.” It went viral via politically aware social media profiles because it highlighted the ignorant attitude that “some” liberals have in America.
8 - Be Brave
If you want viral content, you have to be brave and do what others are too cowardly to do. Take a swipe at religion. Show pictures of Muslim killers and point out what many people think of them. Take a swipe at Jewish people for keeping the media so exclusively Jewish, or take a swipe at a high-ranking member of Scientology where others won’t for fear of being sued.
9 - Write “Studies Show”
Dennis Prager has created videos to help young people understand that when something says “Studies show” that it is not always true, and he is quite correct.
If you want to make something viral, post a lie along with studies show and/or a percentage. For example, studies show that 78% of aborted fetuses scream as they are removed. Obviously it is not true, but even the sentence itself appears to look legitimate.
10 - Latch On To A Trend
There is no easier way to get a lot of attention than to latch on to a trend. If there is a current trend for eating pumpkin seeds to improve eyesight, then write that you have been eating them for the past 20 years and that your eyesight is so perfect that you can see things in complete darkness. If there is a trend for carrot shaped phones, then write viral content reviewing ten of them.
