It’s not a secret anymore, drones are here and they’re here to stay only now they come in all shapes and sizes and have far more capabilities than anyone ever anticipated. More specifically, there’s now a new solar powered drone that takes off like a helicopter and, once at a safe altitude, has wings that fold out as it zips away like an airplane.
Solar Unmanned Air Vehicles
These drones can fly all day on solar power, and are known as Solar Unmanned Air Vehicles; Quad or SUAV:Q’s. They take off vertically and then unfold with the aid of lightweight hinges into flat, winged aircrafts like a plane. With the ability to hover when in flight, this new drone allows farmers to make cost effective aerial surveys of their land. They’re then able to better identify areas in need of irrigation, herbicides and fertilisers, and can better direct their resources to those areas to avoid waste. When the drone is being instructed to land, it morphs back into a quadcopter and lands vertically.
Now farmers with large areas of cropland can reap higher yields and mitigate wasteful practices with these these low-cost, high-endurance drones.
Miniature shape shifting drones
In addition to large drones that act like airplanes, there are now tiny drones that scientists hope one day will have the capability to go from gliding through the air, to vehicles that can move through water with one small change of the wing as the drone is in mid-flight. This is made possible by hybridizing materials and utilizing their best properties.
Drones like these are intended to mimic the skilled movements of diving birds such as the Puffin, which can shorten the length of its’ wings mid-flight and dive headfirst into water without injuring itself.
The Air Force has an express interest in these types of vehicles so that they can work on developing wings that change shape on small aircraft, too. If the wings can morph mid-air instead of someone having to manipulate them by hand, then there is less risk of them breaking and a faster transition from air to sea can be made.

When a certain material can recall its shape, scientists and researchers’ ears perk up, as such materials allow for a wide range of applications; for instance, a robot that can assemble itself or medical implants that are unique to each patient.
So far, most materials that have been rigorously researched and investigated have been flat structures, and fold up a little like paper to make more complicated configurations. Not only can materials like this shift their shape, but they can also self-assemble and repair themselves to. If you take two pieces of this type of material and place them next to one another and heat them up, the metal will melt and fuse both pieces together while only losing a small amount of mechanical strength.
As more and more research is funded to design and create drones that can shape shift, the more applications for this type of technology will become apparent. The future for drones certainly seems bright!
