Black spots are usually a sign of damp and that’s something you don’t want inside or outside your house.
Living in damp conditions has been linked with an array of health issues, it also looks unsightly. But, damp can actually cause serious damage to your home as well. Not only does damp attract pests that can eat your timber and electrical wiring, it also can cause wet rot and undermine the structural integrity of your house.
Removing the back spots from your vinyl cladding is essential, but you also need to locate the underlying issue.
The Simplest Solution
You can replace your vinyl cladding. In fact, there are so many different types of cladding available this is an enticing idea. However, it will be a more expensive option than cleaning your siding, although it will definitely eliminate the back spots!
Bleach
In fact, bleach is the simplest solution when it comes to removing black spots. However, it is important to note that bleach is a powerful substance and you need to proceed with caution.
It can actually damage the paint on your siding or the outer protective layer. That’s why it’s essential that you try it in a small corner first where damage won’t be noticed.
You’ll need to mix ½ cup of bleach with a cup of water and then apply it directly to the siding. Leave it for a few minutes before scrubbing to remove the black spot. You can then rinse it down and leave the area for at least 24 hours to ensure no damage has occurred.

Hydrogen Peroxide
This is another useful chemical around the home and one that is effective at removing black spots. The stronger the peroxide the better.
It can be applied directly to your siding although you should do a test area in the same way as you did with the bleach.
Once you’ve applied it you will need to leave it for several minutes, it will start to bubble. You can then scrub the area with a soft brush and rinse it off.
Again, check first before doing the entire house.
Laundry Detergent
A 50/50 mix of laundry detergent and water should be effective at eliminating your black spots. You will need a soft brush and may need to scrub a little harder than if you’re using bleach or hydrogen peroxide.
However, it is highly unlikely to damage your home.
Of course, you should start from the bottom and work your way up, this will reduce the risk of streaks down the side of your home.
Pressure Washer
It is possible to remove black spots with a pressure washer but you do need to be aware that on a high setting it is highly likely to damage your siding.
It’s also advisable to check that the use of pressure washers is permissible in your area.
If you’re using a pressure washer then always angle it downwards to get the best results and avoid forcing water behind your siding.
