There are different driving mobility centers that offer disability driving assessment for drivers of all ages. If you are only 16, some of these establishments will offer the service to you if you collect PIP (Personal Independence Payment). Some centers might have an age limit of 17, but they tend to drivers of all other ages. Motorbike riders and holders of group 2 license can also get a disablement driving assessment.
Almost every driving mobility center will have car drivers assessment in all their multiple locations. If you don’t have a disability and want to evaluate your road worthiness for other reasons, like in the case of elderly drivers, this service can help you too.

What is assessed?

Drivers with medical conditions will be tested for their cognitive and physical abilities behind the wheel. This disability driving evaluation will reveal if the medical condition is affecting the ability for save driving and if adaptations are relevant in that particular case.

Even for motorbike riders, centers that cater to them will test for the same thing and contemplate if adaptations are needed and if the condition has affected their ability to ride.

Who requests disablement driving assessments?

Driving mobility centers will usually get requests from different bodies to carry out these assessments on disabled people. Examples include, but are not limited to, MAP (Motability Managed Adaptations Programme), DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency), doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other qualified health professionals.

However, this disability driving assessment must not be ordered by a health professional or relevant agency. When people feel they need one, they can also request an evaluation. Getting a referral and calling up a driving mobility center is not against the law. Some people would rather not wait for authorities to order the evaluation, they are concerned and want to see this for themselves.

Selection of adaptation

With the technological advancements in the world today, there is a wide selection of adaptations that can help many people with disabilities who want to keep driving. A disability driving evaluation is able to reveal the type of adaptation required and driving mobility centers have a wide range available. With guidance from professionals, you can choose your own adaptation based on your test results and their recommendation. You might just need a steering aid to drive safe but some other might require a more complicated system.

These centers even offer specialized services for wheelchair users. If you use a wheelchair and everything checks out on your disability driving appraisal, except the fact that you cannot get out of the wheelchair to enter the car, a driving mobility center can offer you a drive-from-wheelchair help. Some of the cars available have high tech or low tech adaptations so there is something for almost everybody.

Summary

If you have a disability but you are still determined to drive yourself, this is no problem because there are options for you. A driving mobility center can test your ability to drive safely on the road and provide adaptations if needed.
