We all know the immense struggles of eating healthy. And while we might not be able to cut junk food straight out of our diets, there is something else we can do- specifically being knowledgeable enough to choose the lesser of two evils. So, with this guide you’ll be able to identify the healthier alternatives to some of the most sinfully good foods we find ourselves consuming on a daily basis.

Junk food staples

If you’re stuck for choice between a burger, hotdog and a pizza, which one would you choose? Which one is the healthiest? Well different varieties of each exist, so it ultimately comes down to your toppings. A pizza with a veggie topping would probably be your safest bet, even though by no measure would it be a healthy meal on its own. To know if you’re really in need of cutting down on all the junk food in your life, get your hands on a BMI calculator for women. With the results, you can assess your dieting scheme to follow.

Caffeine

We’ve heard plenty of rumours circulating caffeine but when you compare it to an energy drink (which is packed to the brim with sugar and calories), it actually has some great benefits. A cup of black coffee each day has been found to be full of antioxidants. So, what this means is that it not only gives you a solid five hours of alertness, it also enhances certain cognitive aspects like short term memory and helps protect against diseases like cancer and dementia!

Meats

If you’re wondering what kind of meat is the healthiest option, there is no right answer as most animals are bred to promote fat growth. For example, did you know that a single piece of chicken has 266% more fat than it did in 1971, and grass-fed beef has 27% less fat than conventional beef? So, it’s less about which kind of meat is healthier but more about the quality of the cut that you get.

Rice

There are various varieties of rice but a common question asked is which is the healthiest? The answer is whole-grain rice. Whole-grain (such as red rice) are packed with fibre, which take up more space in the stomach, therefore signalling faster to the brain that you are full. Studies show that people with whole grain in their diets are likely to lose up to 2.4 times faster than those who eat refined grains.

Fruits and juices

While fruits are the healthiest snacks you could be having, can you say the same for a glass of prepared fruit juice? The answer is no. Juices often have large amounts of sugar added to them to make the tartness more bearable. However, this nearly doubles your calorie intake in the process.

Cheese

Here’s a fun fact- when it comes to healthier cheese, lighter cheese has less calories than their yellower counterparts! But no matter what cheese you’re cutting a slice out of, exercise control as these can be quite fatty.

And there you have it- your handy guide to eating better and making the best choice out of what you have!
