HEROES FOCUS ON INTANGIBLE VALUES

Sometimes the only way to overcome a tangible problem is with an intangible solution. But it takes special vision to see the intangible solution. When Billy Joel was a young man, he loved music. But it is difficult to make a living as a musician. When he was young, he spent many nights singing in dimly lit bars, playing the piano for drunks and people who were too busy talking to notice he was there. He was a high school dropout with no experience. Getting a regular paying job was pretty tough. He was so poor he slept in laundromats. But he kept working, kept trying, and kept pursuing his passion with all of his heart. He made some tough decisions along the way. He decided never to sell out his soul for financial security. He decided never to give up. By following his passion, he ultimately found not only financial security but also great wealth and fame. The rewards speak for themselves. Billy Joel put intangible values above tangible financial needs and he was rewarded in the end.
"For what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world
and loses his own soul?"

Most of the worlds’ religions and the most respected leaders of all time all teach that you must have a central focus to your life and a purpose around which all other things revolve. When you do this, everything else falls into place.
Stephen Covey, in his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, explains that in order to be truly successful, you must focus on the intangibles of life—on those things that give life meaning.
Kahlil Gibran said, “All work is empty save when there is love, for work is love made visible.”
The Sioux Indians teach that when you focus on spiritual things and keep your mind centered on a specific intangible purpose instead of fretting over the daily business of living, everything else falls into place.
Henry David Thoreau said, "There is no more fatal blunder than he who consumes the greater part of his life getting his living."
Jesus Christ said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you."
Albert Schweitzer said, “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be truly happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”

The Jews, the Hindus, the Buddhists, the Christians and even the agnostics all agree — when your life revolves around a central purpose, life’s practical issues have a way of working themselves out and satisfaction with life is the net result.
If you’re not putting your time and energies into the things that bring satisfaction to your soul, and give life meaning for you, then you aren’t fulfilling your best and highest purpose. You’re spinning your wheels and biding your time until retirement while your soul withers on the vine. When you give up your dreams, you die a little bit inside with each passing day.

If you aren’t doing what you are doing with a passion, then why are you doing it at all? When you find something you can really do with a passion, it’s worthwhile to make the sacrifices and take the risks necessary in order to pursue it. There is a parable about a man who searched all his life for a pearl of great value. When he finally found it, he sold all he had in order to buy it. When you find something you can do with passion, something that gives your life meaning, you should be ready and willing to do whatever it takes to pursue it. Better to be poor and happy than to be financially secure and miserable.
