NOTE: As a thank you for reading this blog post, we are providing you with a free excerpt from Dan Castro’s book CRITICAL CHOICES THAT CHANGE LIVES.

The Native Americans have a beautiful philosophy about preserving the earth for future generations that is expressed profoundly in the following statement:

In our way of life, in our government, with every decision we make, we always keep in mind the Seventh Generation to come. It’s our job to see that the people coming ahead, the generations still unborn, have a world no worse than ours—and hopefully better. When we walk upon Mother Earth we always plant our feet carefully because we know the faces of our future generations are looking up at us from beneath the ground. We never forget them.

Oren Lyons, “Onandaga Faithkeeper”

Thousands of years ago, the Native Americans could see things the newly arrived Europeans could not see. They could see into the future. Was this a spiritual gift? No. They chose to see the future and this was their genius.

The Native Americans are not the only ones who could see into the future. This genius was also beautifully expressed by the great composer Ludwig van Beethoven. One day, after listening to Beethoven’s String Quartet in F, one of his critics, composer Muzio Clementi, said to him, “Surely you don’t consider these works to be music.” To which Beethoven replied, “Oh they are not for you. They are for a later age.” That age was today and Beethoven had the vision to foresee it. Today, everyone has heard of Beethoven. Who do you know that has ever heard of Clementi?

Human beings are slowly learning how important it is to put future interests on an equal footing with the present interests. Some third world countries are finally realizing that they can make more money and protect their people’s financial future by protecting their natural resources rather than by selling them off. On August 1, 2002, President El Jadj Omar Bongo, the leader of a small West African country Gabon created 13 national parks, protecting one of the world’s last true jungle paradises (11,000 square miles) from loggers. In the Ivindo National Park, there is a paradise within a paradise called Langoue Bai (only recently named), where elephants, gorillas, monkeys, crocodiles, large forest antelopes, parrots, and all manner of birds come to greet each other and play in a river fed by waterfalls. When these areas were first explored in 2000 by J. Michael Faye, most of these animals had never before seen human contact. It was and is a true Eden. Now it is protected, and the future of the country will be enhanced and preserved by eco-tourism.

President Bongo helped his country and the world see that people are better off preserving our natural resources than exploiting them in the present for short-term gain.

Some causes are bigger than life. They are bigger than me and you and all of our problems put together. Some causes cannot be achieved in our lifetime. If we open our eyes, we will see them. But once we see them, we will have a decision to make.

The Decision Behind the Decision

Learn to see into the future.

What you see might change your world.
